Abstract
Introduction: Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant that is present in tea, coffee, and cocoa plants. It works by activating the brain and central nervous system. Too much caffeine has been linked to poor sleep quality and increased daytime sleepiness which may affect a person's health. Caffeine Intake Pattern may influence the knowledge of effects of caffeine among undergraduate students. Objectives: To determine the association between caffeine intake pattern and knowledge of effects of caffeine among undergraduate students in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Selangor. Methods: A cross-sectional study where 192 undergraduate’s students from 2 selected faculties in UPM (Faculty of Forestry and Environmental and Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication) were participated in this study. Simple random sampling was used in the study. A self-administered questionnaire on caffeine intake pattern and the knowledge of effects of caffeine was used in this study. The questionnaire comprises three parts which are socio-demographic, caffeine intake pattern and knowledge of effects of caffeine. SPSS version 28.0 is used for data entry and analysis. Descriptive analysis, Chi-Square test and Point-Biserial Correlation were used to evaluate the resulting data. Result: A total of 154 respondents had participated in the study. The mean age of the respondents was 23.01 years old, 40.3% (62) were male, 59.7% (92) were female, 75.3% (116) were Year 4 students, 20.8% (32) were Year 3 students and 1.3% (2) Year 1 students. About 72.1% (111) of the respondents were caffeine consumer and 27.9%(43) were non caffeine consumer. Besides, 36.4% (56) having good knowledge, 27.9%(43) having moderate knowledge and 7.8%(12) having little knowledge on effects of caffeine. The result shows there is no significant relationship between caffeine intake pattern and knowledge of effects of caffeine among undergraduate students (p=0.788). Meanwhile, the result shows there is no significant relationship between socio-demographic characteristics and the knowledge of effects of caffeine (p>0.05). Conclusion: The result obtained in this study showed that majority respondents had 1-3 times a week of intake of caffeine and had good knowledge of effect of caffeine. Although it seems that the respondents are aware with their caffeine intake pattern, they need to become more aware with the side effects if they over consume it.
