Abstract
Background: Hypertension (HTN) or high blood pressure (BP) is an incurable chronic disease that may require lifelong management with antihypertensive medications. Despite a high prevalence of HTN in Malaysia, our country still recorded a low level of BP control. Poor management of this non-communicable disease (NCD) will contribute to complications like cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and eventually premature deaths. The most significant cause of uncontrolled BP is antihypertensive medication nonadherence. Objective: The main objective of this study is to determine the association between pharmacological treatment satisfaction and antihypertensive medication adherence among hypertensive patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study with convenient sampling was conducted at Family Medicine Clinic (FMC), HPUPM, from July to September 2022 with a self-administered questionnaire. Result: From a total of 111 respondents who participated in the study, the majority were satisfied with their HTN pills (n = 63, 53.8%), but only 39 or 35.1% of the respondents adhered to the HTN drug regime. The findings proved that there was a significant positive correlation between pharmacological treatment satisfaction and antihypertensive medication adherence among hypertensive patients (r = 0.421, p = 0.001), and confidence (β = 0.268, p = 0.007), and convenience (β = 0.237, p = 0.021) were significant predictors of antihypertensive medication adherence. Conclusion: The study showed that less than half of the respondents adhered to their antihypertensive medications. Thus, there is a need for healthcare providers to plan effective strategies to enhance hypertensive patients’ pharmacological treatment satisfaction, especially convenience and confidence in their medication regime, to boost their adherence to antihypertensive medications.
