Abstract
Introduction: University students are often prone to mental health disorders like depression especially during this post-Covid-19 pandemic where every student need to cope with the current situation and have to face online classes at the same time face-to-face classes. This can disrupt their sleep quality due to the limited time until they sacrifice their sleep time, especially when staying home. Objective: To determine the absolute association between depression and sleep quality among undergraduate students during a post-Covid-19 pandemic in Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among students from the first to the fourth year from a few faculties in UPM. Two instruments were used in this study: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). SPSS version 27 is used to analyzed the data. The questionnaire was distributed online and managed to get 142 respondents. Data were analyzed using an independent t-test, one-way dependent ANOVA, and Pearson’s Correlation depending on the nature of the data. Results: The findings in this study showed that the mean ± SD for a total score of level of depression is 6.74±3.357, while the mean ± SD for a total score of sleep quality is 10.57±1.504. Analysis revealed that there is no significant association between socio-demographic characteristics and depression. The analysis also showed no significant association between socio-demographic characteristics and sleep quality except that the year of study shows a significant relationship with p=0.050. Lastly, there is a significant association between depression and quality of sleep (p<0.001). Conclusion: Depression was found to significantly affect the sleep quality among students in UPM even after the pandemic COVID-19. As a result, intervention for people that have depression and adequate sleep satisfaction should be taken among undergraduate students even after the COVID-19 outbreak further to improve their focus on study and academic performance.
