Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the breast, either in one or both breasts. Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women, affecting 1.2 million women each year. In Malaysia, it is the most common cancer among women, where 1 out of every 19 women is at risk between 30 and 60 years of age. In the prevention of breast cancer, a breast screening campaign, programme, and examination have been introduced. Breast self-examination (BSE) is one of the most important screening techniques for early detection of breast cancer. Objective: To assess the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice of breast self-examination (BSE) among the women's community in an area in Tuaran, Sabah. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 268 respondents from a community in the area of Tuaran, Sabah. A self-administered online survey was used in this study. The questionnaire comprises four parts, which are socio-demographic, knowledge, attitude, and practice of breast self-examination (BSE). SPSS version 28.0 is used for data entry and analysis. A descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, and normality test were used to evaluate the resulting data. Result: The mean age of the respondents was 2.45 ± 1.183 (30-39 years old), whereas the majority of the respondents were indigenous to Sabah (75.5%) and married (60.8%). About 62.7% (64) of the respondents showed a good level of knowledge, while 37.3% (38) showed a poor level of knowledge. 64.7% (66) show a positive attitude towards BSE, while 35.3% (36) show a negative attitude towards BSE. 50.1% (52) show negative practice 49.9% (50) show positive practice of BSE. The result shows there is a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude towards BSE (p <0.001) and between knowledge and attitude (p <0.05). Meanwhile, the result shows there is no significant association between attitude and practice of BSE (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results obtained in this study showed that most of the respondents have a good level of knowledge and a positive attitude towards BSE but poor practice of BSE. As a result, it will be very beneficial in properly educating the public especially about women’s health.
