Abstract

Background: Influenza i s a contagious febrile respiratory i llness that can result i n mild to severe i llness i n vulnerable people such as children and older populations with underlying conditions. Results from the report presented l ast year (2019), at the 10th Edition of the Options for the Control of Influenza Conference (Options X) i n Singapore disclosed that i nfluenza i nfections are the major contributor factor for hospitalisation among the older demographic group i n Malaysia. Thus, vaccinations are the primary preventive care against Influenza virus. Therefore, this study aims at assessing the knowledge and attitude towards the i nfluenza vaccination as well as the rate of vaccination uptake among medical students and staff i n the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted from 17th to 25th August 2020 among medical students and staff, be i t academic or non-academic i n the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM. Data analyses will be performed with SPSS 22.0. Chi-square tests will be used to determine the association between the dependent and independent variables. Result: The required sample size was 384 respondents. Based on the distribution of answers on knowledge, the majority 68.8% of respondents have a good knowledge level regarding influenza and influenza vaccines. The prevalence of influenza vaccination uptake among students and staff was only 44.8% which i s 172 out of 384 2 respondents within the past three years. Gender, age distribution, occupation and income status has no significant association with knowledge and attitude level among all respondents (n=384), but income status and age distribution are statistically significant with prevalence of influenza vaccination uptake. Academic rank, level of education and income status among staff (n=61) have significant association with knowledge level and influenza vaccine uptake. Conclusion: Based on our study, the majority of the respondents have a good knowledge and attitude level about influenza vaccination with nearly half of them having been vaccinated with influenza vaccine.
