Abstract

Background: Even though the worldwide nursing shortage has decreased from 6.6 million in 2016 to roughly 6 million in 2018, the fact is that to fill the demands of every person on the planet, 36 million nurses will be required to work around the world by 2030. Therefore, more male nurses will contribute to the profession's diversity and help to overcome the nursing shortage. There is a demand for male nurses in Malaysia. However, the existence of some unfavourable attitudes in our community tends to dissuade men away from nursing. Objective: This study was conducted to determine the attitude of undergraduate students in University Putra Malaysia towards male nurses. Methods: This study’s design is a cross-sectional study. Two types of non-probability sampling were used which are purposive sampling and convenience sampling. The Faculty of Medicine and Health Science (FMHS) was purposively chosen among all 16 faculties for the study. Convenience sampling was used in the study and Attitude Towards Men in Nursing Questionnaire (AMnQ) was distributed online through WhatsApp and Google Mail. Participants completed a questionnaire that contains two parts about sociodemographic and AMnQ. Result: 106 participants participated in this study. The mean ± standard deviation for attitudes towards male nurse scores of the respondents was 54.79 ± 5.40. Also, 66.0% of the respondents had a neutral attitude towards male nurses. The findings showed that there was no statistically significant association between sociodemographic and attitude towards male nurses where p-value (p>0.05). Conclusion: From the research, it shows that majority of the undergraduate student in FPSK was having a neutral attitude towards male nurses and no statistically significant association between sociodemographic characteristic and their attitude were found.
