Abstract

Green Leafy Vegetables (GLV) is essential for healthy life due to their high nutrient properties including mineral such as Potassium, Magnesium and Zinc. The mineral found in GLV is normally taken up from the soil. Hence, the soil becomes an important role in recycling the nutrient in the plant. However, the accumulation of heavy metals such as Lead, Cadmium and Arsenic will be toxic to human health. Thus, the objective of this research was to determine, compare and correlate the mineral and heavy metal content in vegetables and soil that uses organic or inorganic fertilizer. The metals were determined in Water Spinach, Kai Choy, and Spinach. The samples were prepared using the Official Method of Analysis of AOAC International and analyze using AAS and ICPMS. The result showed that mineral content (K, Mg, Zn) in all vegetables have no significant difference between the two farms (p>0.05). Meanwhile, K in soil has a significant difference between the two farms (p<0.05); Mg has no significant difference between two farms (p>0.05) and Zn has no significant differences in the organic farm (p>0.05) but has significant differences in the inorganic farm (p<0.05). Heavy metal (Pb, Cd, As) in vegetables has no significant difference between farms. Meanwhile, Pb and As in soil has a significant difference between farm (p<0.05) but Cd in soil has no significant difference (p>0.05). From the result, indicate that the level of metals in vegetables and soil was not only because of the natural mechanism but other factors contributed to results such as anthropogenic activities
