Abstract
As Malaysia is predicted to become an ageing population by 2020, nutrition requirement for the elderly has yet to be well-defined causing them to be at higher risk of malnutrition. Even though there is still no standard system in community setting, it is crucial to overcome malnutrition among the elderly as it may lead to many adverse outcomes. This is a cross-sectional study involving 102 subjects aimed to determine the prevalence of malnutrition risk and its association with socio-demographic, anthropometric, functional status, multi-morbidities, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors among elderly in Flat Taman Melati, Kuala Lumpur. An interview-based questionnaire was administered to collect data on socio-demographic, multi-morbidities, lifestyle, and psychosocial. Anthropometric measures included Body Mass Index (BMI), calf circumference (CC), Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI), and body fat percentage. Handgrip strength and walking speed were also assessed to determine the functional status. The malnutrition risk was assessed using Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF). The MNA-SF scores classified respondents as at risk of malnutrition or well-nourished. Most of the respondents were younger-old (60-69 years) elderly (76%), female (53%), married (73%), completed secondary or tertiary education (79%), and had monthly household income above RM1200 (64%). The mean age of the respondents was 66.63 ± 5.22 years. The prevalence of malnutrition risk in this study was 48%. The psychosocial status was significantly associated with malnutrition risk (p ≤ 0.001). However, there was no significant association between socio-demographic, anthropometric, functional status, multi-morbidities, and lifestyle factors with malnutrition risk. In conclusion, elderly with psychosocial issues were more likely to be at risk of malnutrition. This indicates that the psychosocial support in the urban community setting is necessary for the elderly. Future studies need to be done with a more representative sample of elderly in Malaysia to obtain general results on malnutrition risk among the elderly in urban areas
