Abstract
Hypertension was a common health problem that occurred among elderly. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of hypertension and factors associated with blood pressure reading among elderly at Rumah Seri Kenangan Cheras, Selangor. A total of 81 residents there were participated after purposively selected. Subject’s anthropometric measurements such as height and weight were measure in order to calculate their Body Mass Index (BMI). Waist circumference and calf circumference also were measured to know their health status. Subjects were asked to complete the questionnaire consisting of 6 components which were sociodemographic factors (age, sex, ethnicity, marital status, education level, previous occupation and sources of income), medical history, risk of malnutrition, dietary intake, lifestyle, depression and blood pressure reading through face-to-face interview. Majority of the subjects were male (59.3%), Malay (69.1%), single (42.0%), had secondary education level (38.3%), self-employed as their previous occupation (45.7%), no additional income (89.0%) with the mean age of 73.41 ± 7.84 years. The mean BMI of the subjects was 24.96 ± 4.50 kg/m2 indicating normal BMI. This study found the prevalence of hypertension among these subjects was 60.5%. The variables that had significantly associated with blood pressure reading were weight (p=0.010), BMI (p=0.020), waist circumference (p=0.030), MUFA with systolic blood pressure (%) (p=0.009), PUFA with both diastolic and systolic blood pressure (g) (p=0.0050), (p=0.023), PUFA (g) with diastolic blood pressure (p=0.048) and fruits with diastolic blood pressure (p=0.050). There were no any significant association found between sociodemographic, medical history, malnutrition risk and lifestyle. In conclusion, current study showed that high level of depression, and being overweight or obese will increase the risk of getting hypertension. Also, high intake of MUFA contributes to high SBP and DBP, low intake of PUFA only contributes to diastolic and high intake of fruits may also contribute high DBP. Future study needs to be done to investigate more details about the factors associated with blood pressure among elderly.
