Abstract
Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength which results in physical disability, poor quality of life and mortality. Sarcopenia is a common geriatric syndrome which related with ageing process. Previous studies have reported a high prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors among elderly population but limited in determined sarcopenia based on Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2014 criterion. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its factors associated among community-dwelling elderly in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) flats Kuala Lumpur (KL). A total of 82 respondents from 3 PPR in KL with a mean age of 67.84 ± 5.18 years old were randomly selected to participate in this study. Criteria of AWGS 2014 was used to identify the presence of sarcopenia. Self-administered questionnaire and face-to-face interview were used to obtain socio-demographic background, physical activity (Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly-Malay version) (PASE-M), malnutrition status (Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form) (MNA-SF), dietary intake (Diet History Questionnaire) (DHQ) and functional status (Instrumental Activity Daily Living-Malay version) (IADL-MV). Body composition by measure anthropometric including body mass index, body fat percentage, mid-upper arm circumference, calf circumference, muscle mass, hand grip strength and gait speed were obtained. Results showed that more than half community-dwelling elderly (53.7%) had sarcopenia in PPR KL. Ethnicity (χ²=4.097, p=0.043) and BMI (χ²=30.582, p=0.000) were significantly associated with sarcopenia. However, there was no association found between physical activity (χ²=1.358, p=0.244), malnutrition status (χ²=3.776, p=0.052), dietary intake (p>0.05) and functional status (χ²=3.198, p=0.074) with sarcopenia. As conclusion, sarcopenia is higher among community-dwelling elderly in PPR KL. Future studies are recommended larger sample size in order to generalize for the whole elderly population in KL by using AWGS 2014 criterion.
