Abstract

Body image dissatisfaction in adolescents can lead to unhealthy lifestyles such as dieting and subsequently eating disorder. However, little is known on the risk factors associated with body image dissatisfaction among Malaysian adolescents. This study aims to determine the risk factors associated with body image dissatisfaction among adolescents aged 13 years old. This was a cross-sectional study that included 933 adolescents from three southern states of Malaysia who were randomly selected from secondary schools. Information on sociodemographic, dietary intakes, and body image were obtained by using a series of self-administered questionnaires, including sociodemographic, MyUM Adolescent Food Frequency Questionnaire, and Contour Drawing Rating Scale. Body image dissatisfaction was determined by discrepancy score more and less than 0. Body weight (kg) and height (cm) was measured, and body mass index (BMI) was estimated and classified according to WHO growth chart 2007. Associations between the potential risk factors and body image dissatisfaction were measured using regression models. Majority of the study adolescents (79.1%) were dissatisfied with their body image. After adjusting for gender, maternal education, energy intake and diet misreporting, adolescents who were underweight (aOR =3.288, 95% CI = 1.373, 7.876), overweight (aOR= 5.583; 95% CI: 2.752, 11.325) and obese (aOR= 9.546; 95% CI: 4.098, 22.238), having abdominal obesity (aOR = 9.388, 95% CI = 2.929, 30.094), and high fruit intake (aOR = 1.655, 95% CI = 1.023, 2.677) were significantly associated with higher body image dissatisfaction. The findings in this study showed that body image dissatisfaction had significant associations with being underweight, having higher BMI and waist circumference, and higher fruit intakes. Due to the high prevalence of body image dissatisfaction, the need of appropriate intervention program is needed to promote positive body image among adolescents.
