Abstract

“Halia Bentong”, scientifically known as Zingiber officinale, is belongs to the family Zingiberaceae that has be planted in Bentong, Pahang. It is well-known of its uses as spices or benefit medicinal plant in folk and traditional medicines. Studies have shown that Z. officinale exhibits various medicinal properties such as anti-microbial activity, reducing gastrointestinal disorder, alternative medicine for rheumatoid arthritis and anti-inflammatory responses. The rhizomes of Z. officinale is used for ginger essential oil (GEO) extraction. However, the chemical composition of GEO is influenced by the geographical region, methods of extractions and the condition of rhizomes. Objectives: The aim of this study is to observe the effect GEO on the antinociceptive activities in mice models. Hypothesis: It is hypothesized that GEO will show analgesic effect in mice induced with nociception. Methodology: The mice models were divided into 5 groups of 6 mice (negative controls, positive controls, and 3 groups pre-treated with GEO at doses of 10, 30, 100 mg/kg) via oral route. The analgesic effect of the extract was assessed using chemical models of nociception namely acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing. Result: It was demonstrated that oral dministration of GEO at doses of 10, 30 and 100 mg/kg produced significant dose- dependent inhibition of acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing (p<0.05). GEO exhibited peripheral analgesic effect in mice due to presence of certain phytochemicals in the rhizomes of Zingiber officinale that play an important role in the inhibition of pain mechanism. Conclusion: Based on the data obtained, GEO was proven the peripheral antinociceptive activity which support its beneficial usage for therapeutic purposes.
