Abstract
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is one of the most common neurophysiological problems. There are many associated factors that increase the risk of CTS. Obesity is also associated to be one of the factors to cause CTS among patients. A cross-sectional study design is done to determine the prevalence of CTS patients of Hospital Serdang and its association with obesity. Data reports consisting of information such as gender, race, age and body mass index (BMI) of 370 patients are obtained from January 2017 until December 2019 from Neurology Department Hospital Serdang. Nerve conduction study (NCS) was done as a golden standard to diagnose CTS. Body Mass Index (BMI) calculation is used to determine obesity patients. The significant correlations between sociodemographic statuses and CTS were analysed using chi-square test. A high prevalence of CTS around 48% among the neurophysiology patients was found. Further finding also reported that there was a moderate prevalence of obesity among carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosed patients in Hospital Serdang which is around 38%. The sociodemographic analysis revealed that there is a significant association between BMI, age and gender with CTS. However, there is no significant association between race and CTS with a value of p>0.05.
