Abstract

Several incidences of adverse reactions following COVID-19 vaccination have been documented because of the vaccine ingredient. Twenty-one confirmed cases of anaphylaxis were reported in United States by Centre for Disease and Prevention (CDC). On the other hand, the awareness of COVID-19 vaccination programme needs to be conducted to achieve herd immunity. Moreover, recent studies reported that people who refused booster vaccination came from lower education background and low monthly income group. Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the allergic reaction post COVID-19 vaccination among Malaysian adults as well as the awareness and booster acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination. Methodology: A questionnaire of 33 questions related to sociodemographic, vaccine and booster awareness, acceptance and allergy reactions was distributed through several social media platforms from March 2022 until June 2022. A sample size of 385 was calculated. Results: The response rate achieved was 80%. Forty-six out of 314 (14.5%) respondents had mild allergic reactions post COVID-19 vaccination and about 0.28% had very severe symptoms. Regarding awareness, only one respondent did not have any sources of knowledge about vaccination programme whereas 259 out of 314 (82.4%) were aware about vaccine programme before getting the appointment. Most respondents who received and planned for booster came from tertiary education background and from bottom 40% of the income group in Malaysia (B40), however, there is no significant association between education level and income classification with booster acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination. Discussion: The symptoms that the respondents had mostly were mild albeit small percentage of respondents had very severe symptoms. They recovered after several weeks of taking medications. Most of the respondents cite social media as their primary information source because during the lockdown, the authorities chose social media as the most effective means of disseminating information regarding COVID-19 immunizations. The information given in social media was perceived as reliable because the government would act if bogus news started spreading. Conclusion: Few respondents had post vaccination allergy. Most respondents had awareness on the vaccination programme. Majority of the respondents in this study were young, of Malay ethnicity and in their tertiary education. Therefore, for a more comprehensive knowledge on the awareness and allergy response from varied backgrounds, a longer term of study is advised.
