Abstract

COVID-19 has forced immediate shifting of physical learning to e-learning in higher education. This transformation is to ensure the continuation process of teaching and learning. It forced students and academics to fully immerse into e-learning. Despite the fact that COVID-19 has entered the endemic phase in our country, the perception and effectiveness of e-learning are unclear among academics. It is vital to ascertain the perception and effectiveness of e-learning among academics from public and private universities as it provide a solid framework for moving higher education towards digital age. Objective: This study aims to identify the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on e-learning perception and effectiveness among academics from public and private universities in Malaysia. Methodology: A cross sectional study with random sampling method was conducted between April and July 2022. A structured online questionnaire was distributed to targeted academics through e-mails or social media channels. The validated questionnaire was divided into three sections: first section gathers demographic information along with educational and teaching background; second section gathers the perception of academics in online learning; third section assembles the effectiveness of e-learning from the aspect of academics’ preparedness in e-learning by close-ended questions with Likert scales. Frequencies and percentages were assessed for demographic data, perception and effectiveness level on e-learning among academics. Pearson correlation coefficient (r) were applied to evaluate the statistical significance between different variables of the study. P-value of less than 0.05 is considered as significant. Results: Of the 382 academic respondents, public universities account for 44.9% followed by private universities (45.2%) and university college (10%). 96.6% academics conducted online classes and state that e-learning is user-friendly (81.3%). However, preparation of the content for e-learning took a lot of time (32.1%), and there was less interaction between academics and students (42.5%). E-learning was found to be ineffective for practical classes (46.4%), whereas academics preferred hybrid learning (68.9%). Discussion: The adequate technological assistance, schedule flexibility, personalised learning satisfaction, and ease of academic evaluation were cited by academics as reasons why e-learning was effective. The limitations included a lack of e-learning training, trouble supervising students, and a lack of hands-on experience for practical courses. Conclusion: This research has generated a conceptual model in determining various variables to sustain e-learning quality in higher education post COVID-19. This will eventually help educational stakeholders in adapting and introducing relevant e-learning strategies that suit the needs of academics in transitioning and scaling up digital learning in higher education.
