Abstract

Seeking information online has become more common during the pandemic due to movement restriction; however, its accuracy is questionable. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse and compare breastfeeding information's content and degree accuracy on Facebook between pre- and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Information from Facebook data-posts (n=456) were collected during pre- and within COVID-19 pandemic (n=288/phase). Keyword searches using Malay and English breastfeeding terminologies were done within public and Facebook groups/pages that originated in Malaysia. Data was recorded into a codebook, which was then transferred into SPSS for content analysis. The accuracy of data-post content was rated based on published policy/guidelines and re-checked by experts using the Delphi method. The majority of breastfeeding-related post contents were sharing personal experience (53.2%) followed by seeking questions (39.3%) and knowledge (8.0%). The number of sharing personal stories and knowledge data-posts during COVID-19 were higher than pre-COVID-19 (p=0.001; 0.749), whereas seeking questions data-posts were higher during the pre-COVID-19 phase (p=0.001). Text form was the highest (94.5%) type of breastfeeding information posted by users, followed by infographic (3.1%) and video (1.8%). About half (46.5%) of data-posts were categorised as misleading, whereas another half were correct (43.7%) and mixed (9.9%) information. The total posts of degree accuracy information had a significant difference between pre- and during the COVID-19 phase (p=0.001). In conclusion, forms of information posts remained consistent; however, the content of breastfeeding information and its degree accuracy were different pre- and during the pandemic. More research is needed to explore the various aspects of online breastfeeding information and its accuracy. This is especially important during the pandemic when the online platform has become the primary communication medium
