Abstract

Performance of horse is often being evaluated by its clinical and blood parameters at pre- and post-race. However, assessment of horse’s performance will be more accurate with the evidence of competition parameters during the actual race. A retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the competition parameters of horses in actual endurance races held in Terengganu International Endurance Park (TIEP), Terengganu from year 2018 to 2020. The horse signalment (sex and age), competition parameters (race distance, average speed and average recovery time) and the racing status (completion or elimination in the race) of all competing horses were retrieved from the official competition results for all events within the stipulated period. A total of 1,016 horses participated from January 2018 to March 2020 in all race categories (40 km, 80 km and 120 km). The results showed that the mean of average speed increases as the race distance increases, indicating that there is a significant improvement in fitness level of horses competing in higher categories of endurance race. Based on competition parameters in relation to racing status, the mean age of endurance horses reaching their peak performance is at 13 years of age for stallions/geldings and 16 years for mares. This suggests that mares are more durable and last longer in competitions compared to the males. In addition, mares take shorter time to recover (lesser average recovery time) as compared to the males, indicating that mares are more calm and in control compared to the males especially stallions, supported by evidence where stallions are more prone to injuries due to aggressive behaviours. Retrospectively, there is a 15 % decrease of participation in 40 km category, 4 % increase in 80 km category and 11 % increase in 120 km category, indicating that the performance level of horses competing in endurance races increases and reaches highest category with 2 years time as stipulated. The elimination rate for all racing categories is 30 %, comprising of elimination for lameness with the highest value (60 %), followed by elimination due to metabolic ailments (22 %) and other reasons (17 %). There is an association between the horse’s age with the average speed, and between the average speed with average recovery time. In conclusion, competition parameters of horses in actual endurance races are reliable in assessing horse performance and it is a useful indicator in predicting future performance of horses.
