Abstract

A survey of freshwater phytoplankton distribution was carried out in two study area UPMKB wastewater reservoirs and UPMKB hatchery to increase completeness of freshwater phytoplankton data in Bintulu, Sarawak. Freshwater phytoplankton have a great potential to be used as live feed and play an important role in aquaculture due to its high content macronutrients including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and both saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Potential freshwater phytoplankton species that can be feed directly to aquaculture species (larvae, juvenile, adults) are still poorly understood and discovered in Bintulu, Sarawak. Therefore, this research will be focusing on the identification and distribution of freshwater phytoplankton in Bintulu, Sarawak. In order to find potential species that can be used as live feed in aquaculture industry. All freshwater phytoplankton samples were collected between March 2022 and December 2022 from two studies areas and identified in laboratory. A total of 52 species were recorded; 2 species (live feed species), 1 species (harmful microalgae), 49 (potential live feed species) based on their nutritional level, growth rate, toxicity availability and so on. Bintulu is a suitable place for aquaculture activities regarding the high variety of freshwater phytoplankton. The recommendation for further research required is to prove these potential freshwater phytoplankton can be promote as ordinary use of live feed for aquatic species.
