Abstract
Kemenyan (benzoin resin) is a type of balsamic resin obtained from the bark of several species of trees from the genus Styrax. The main components of benzoin resin are benzoic acid, benzaldehyde and benzyl benzoate which have bactericidal, germicidal, antiviral and fungicidal properties. In this project, benzoin resin extract was studied for its potential antifungal activity against Sporothrix schenckii. Disk diffusion method was used to detect the presence of zone of inhibition (ZOI) followed by broth microdilution method to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Further assessment on the effect of benzoin resin extract towards S. schenckii was done by inoculation on Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) to determine the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC). Presence of ZOI was exhibited by benzoin resin extract against S. schenckii at concentration of 5% and higher. The minimum inhibitory concentration and mean minimum inhibitory concentration for benzoin resin extract was determined at 10% concentration while the minimum fungicidal concentration and mean minimum fungicidal concentration was determined at 10% and 16.67% concentration respectively. The study has demonstrated that benzoin resin extract possesses antifungal effect against Sporothrix schenckii.
