Abstract

Captive wildlife is at high risk for exposure to infectious pathogens including parasite infestation due to the limited spaces of the captive habitat. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of endoparasites present in captive Malayan tigers (Panthera tigris jacksoni) across selected wildlife rescue centre and zoological parks within Peninsular Malaysia. A cross-sectional sampling was conducted in September and October 2020. A total of twenty-six fresh faecal samples of Malayan tigers (N=26) were collected in the morning from the three sampling sites, the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (n=17), Melaka Zoo and Night Safari (n=3) and Zoo Negara (n=6). Faecal endoparasite presence was examined for any presence of ova, oocysts or larvae using simple floatation and formalin–ether sedimentation technique. Results showed a total prevalence of 7.7% (2/26) endoparasites, while at the premises level were 33.3% (1/3) being from Melaka Zoo and Night Safari and 16.7% (1/6) from Zoo Negara. From the two positive samples, three endoparasitic ova were identified as Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina and a Strongyle-like ova. As a conclusion, the prevalence of endoparasites in captive Malayan tigers sampled for the study was low. This can be attributed to the good husbandry management, regular monitoring for worm infestation and appropriate preventive medicine practices for control and good nutrition provided for the tigers.
