Abstract
Introduction: Most of the community in Malaysia are not aware and less in self preparation to encounter disaster. Selangor prone to severe flood and Klang area included in the list of flood-prone areas in Selangor. Children are the populations who are more vulnerable to experience physical or emotional illness or injury towards flood hazard. Thus, by introducing the learning model on flood preparedness to the vulnerable group, the resilient community toward hazard from flood phenomena can be developed in our country. Objective: To evaluate the school children's flood preparedness knowledge level following the intervention program of introducing the prototype flood preparedness learning model. Methodology: A Quasi- experimental study was carried out among primary school children at flood prone area of Klang, Selangor. A total of 110 students each for two different groups (treatment and control) was recruited in this study. Treatment group were gave intervention on introduction of learning model on flood preparedness while control group were not given the intervention. Five primary schools located at flood- prone area was randomiy selected as for recruiting school children purposes. Pre and post questjonnaire w<1s used to obtain basic information and used to evaluate the knowledge leveis of School-based flood preparedness before and after the introduction of the Leaming model among primary school children. Each set of questionnaire have 4 sub- element which are General flood knowledge, Flood warning, assembling flood preparedness kit and Readiness of Response to Flood. Results: 0.743 (-0.978, 2.463) of mean difference shows no significant different on total score of basic knowledge level on flood preparedness between treatment and control group. Both group shows approximately same level of basic knowledge. ANCOV A was used to test the effect of group interaction for each sub- elements. [General Flood Knowledge] There is no significant effect of the educational learning model on introduction of knowledge to the treatment group after the adjustment of the pretesting score, F (2, 149) = 1.227, p = 0.270 (p > 0.05). [Flood Warning] There is a significant effect of the educational learning model on introduction of knowledge to the treatment group after the adjustment of the pretesting score, F (2, 149) =37.901, p < 0.001. [Assembling Flood Preparedness Kit] There is a significant effect of the educational learning model on introduction of know ledge to the treatment group after the adjustment of the pretesting score, F (2, 149) =83.325, p < 0.001. [Readiness of Response to Flood] There is a significant effect of the educational learning model on introduction of knowledge to the treatment group after the adjustment of the pretesting score, F (2, 149) =4. 748, p = 0.031 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The finding of this study gave positive outcome on the effectiveness after the introduction of the Leaming model with four sub-elements of flood preparedness knowledge among the primary school children in Klang, Selangor. Keywords: Flood, Flood prone area, Selangor, Learning Model, School children.
