Abstract
Introduction: Organophosphate is one of the major compounds of chemical pesticide which is widely used among farmers in Malaysia to protect their crops against disease and pest. The use of OPs however has an impact on human health. The wide use of organophosphate pesticide made this chemical as an environmental pollutant which can bring significant harm to humans. Children are vulnerable group because the neurodevelopment are not fully developed. The exposure of organophosphate may cause the inhibition of acetyl-cholinesterase and the accumulation of acetylcholine. Depending on the dose, it can cause acute cholinergic toxicity, a delayed neurology, chronic neurotoxic and developmental neurotoxicity. Objective: This study is to determine the association between blood cholinesterase level and the neurobehavioral performance among primary school children in Tanjung Karang Selangor. Methodology: This cross sectional comparative study was carried out on 80 children who were exposed to pesticide and 60 children as the comparative group. Questionnaire was filled by their parents to obtain their children background information. The cholinesterase level was determined by taking using LOVIBOND 412870 AF287. Finger prick technique was use to collect the blood. All seven test of Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery (NCTB) were used to measure their neurobehavioral performance.
