Abstract

Natural rubber, also called India rubber or caoutchouc, as initially produced, consists of polymers of the organic compound isoprene, with minor impurities of other organic compounds, plus water. Malaysia and Indonesia are two of the leading rubber producers. In this study, natural rubber latex has been chosen as the additional material to be used to investigate the performance of binder. The aim of this study is to determine the performance of latex modified binder. The experiments were carried out by adding natural rubber latex of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by weight of Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC). In this experiment, the latex is used as a binder and being added to the aggregate before mixing with the bitumen. In order to remove the moisture of the water content on the latex, it is important to mix the latex with the aggregate at higher temperature. Because of the properties of the latex that good bind material, it is belie ve that by the addition of the latex can improve the strength and the performance of the sample. Natural rubber latex qualities were tested in by conducting fundamental test such as penetration, softening point, viscosity, flash and fire. On the other hands, the rheological properties were determined by conducting dynamic shear rheometer. For the performance test that had been used in this experiment were Density and Void Analysis, Resilient Modulus, Marshall Stability, Fatigue, Rutting and Tensile Strength Ratio. This study will determine whether the addition of the natural rubber latex might help rubber industry in Malaysia and also it is government agenda in order to boost rubber industry.
