Abstract

Rain garden is one of the best practices commonly adopted to minimize the stormwater runoff. Rain garden is normally planted with native plant and filled with several layers such as soils, sand, gravel and additional selected filter. Many benefits that can be obtained by applying rain garden such as improving the quality of the water and reducing the probability of flooding at certain areas. In this study, performance of rain garden in treating grey water was investigated. A rain garden box was designed and fabricated with specific dimensions to cater grey water from Cafe of Faculty Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia. This rain garden was planted with Pandanus and layered with several layers of filter media such as organic soil, sand, gravel and selected filter media which was gootextile. Grey water was altered to discharge into the rain garden at specific discharge of 3.6Umin for one hour. This discharge is simulated the average discharge during peak hour flowing out from the hand washing at the cafe. The effluent of rain garden was collected every 1 minute and the calculated peak discharge at the outlet of the rain garden was 2.88Umin. This shows that rain garden have the capability to reduce water peak discharge. Besides that, several water quality tests were conducted for the grey water before and after being treated by the rain garden, such as pH, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Oil and Grease, Ammonia Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus. There were changes in term of pH from acidic towards approximately neutral (from pH 5.98- pH 6.13). While the other parameters, BOD, COD, Oil and Grease, Ammonia Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus indicate percentage of reduction (%) of 14.29%, 0%, 29.83%, 71.43, and 12.5% respectively.
