Abstract

Musa Paradisiaca readymade powder was used as a sample for the analysis. The main aim of this study was to form banana powder into tablets and this study was designed to examine the physical and mechanical properties of banana powder and tablets. The idea to tablet the baby food based on banana powder was due to the realization of the advantages it can have to the consumer and manufacturer. It can help shortening time preparation for working parents and easy to keep. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of the compression pressure of banana powder and to investigate the dissolution of banana tablets. Findings from this work are essential for product storage, transportation and packaging. A 13mm uniaxial die was used to compact 0.5g and 1.0g of powder into banana tablets at six different compressive forces which 2kN, 4kN, 6kN, 8kN, 9kN and 9.8kN. A binder known as moringa was added to the tabletting process because moringa is packed full of nutritional value. Based on the experimental work, the particle size of banana powder at d(0.5) is 37.368 + 1.411. From the density value, this study is able to recognize the flow character of the banana powder where it is very poor flowability due to the values of Hausner Ratio (HR) which is 1.46 and Carr Index (CI) which is 31%. As a conclusion, a 10% composition of binder is an acceptable combination of banana powder and Moringa powder. It fulfills the criteria of the good tablet where 10% composition has high strength to withstand a fiction during handling. Thus, this study provides a basic understanding of the compression and dissolution characteristic for banana tablets which may then further be used for product development for baby food by the industry.
