Abstract
Introduction: Leptospirosis is classified as a zoonotic disease as it can be transmitted between animals and humans under certain conditions. The causative agent of leptospirosis is the spirochete Leptospira interrogans. This disease mostly affected the underdeveloped, developing, and developed regions of the world, covering various epidemiological settings. Leptospirosis remains a concern in Malaysia, as the number of cases reported had steadily increased from year to year. Objectives: To study the level of knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding leptospirosis among urban communities in selected area of Hulu Langat, Selangor. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 290 healthy individuals in Ampang Jaya residents aged between 18 to 60 years old. Data of personal information on the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents were recorded. KAP survey concerning leptospirosis using modified questionnaires as the study instrumentation was carried out. The level of knowledge, attitude and practice on leptospirosis were evaluated using scoring method and the data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 27.0 Windows. Results and Discussion: Majority of respondents were Bumiputra (61%) with a mean age of 35.28 (SD 8.67) years. Of 290, only 15.5% of respondents had good knowledge while 81% showed a good attitude and 76.6% showed good practices in choosing a clean restaurant. The result of the chi-square test indicated that age factor had significantly associated with knowledge and attitude on leptospirosis among urban communities (p = 0.00l, p = <0.05). Respondents below 32 years old were more likely to exhibit good knowledge compared to those who were 32 years and above. Respondents from younger age group tend to have easier access to information especially through internet sources. With the advance technology that the world has today, information regarding any disease can be easily retrieved. Conclusion: In terms of overall level of knowledge, attitude, and preventive practice, this study discovered that respondents had mostly poor knowledge despite having good attitude and scored fairly good in certain preventive practices. Age was the prominent factor influencing the overall knowledge and attitude of urban residents in Hulu Langat where the young age group was more prone to have good knowledge on leptospirosis. It is a must to developing health education and health promotion programs regarding leptospirosis to enhance the public knowledge on leptospirosis. Keywords: Knowledge, attitude, practice, leptospirosis, urban communities.
