Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii is a very important zoonotic protozoan with worldwide distribution. T. gondii is able to infect most warm-blooded animals including human leading to embryonic death, mummification, abortion, stillbirth. In dogs, fatal cases normally occur in animals that are severely immunosuppressed. There is limited information available on the seroprevalence of T. gondii among pet dogs in Malaysia. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii in pet dogs and to determine the risk factors associated with it. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Klang area involving three veterinary clinics. Serum samples were collected from a total of 154 pet dogs and tested using an ELISA test (ID screen® Toxoplasmosis Indirect Multi-species). Seroprevalence of T. gondii among pet dogs was (14.3%; CI 95%=9.2%-20.8%) in (22 out of 154 samples). Potential risk factors observed in dogs were management which includes (indoor and free roamer) and presence of neurological signs (seizure, ataxia, abnormal gait, paresis, paralysis, muscle weakness, tremors). At multivariable level, dogs that were managed as free roamers were more likely to be seropositive (OR=2.806 CI 95%=1.036-7.600) compared with indoor dogs. Furthermore, dogs that showed neurological signs were three times more likely to be seropositive (OR=3.458, CI 95%=1.162-10.293) towards T. gondii compared to those that did not show any signs. In conclusion, these results suggest that T. gondii is prevalent among pet dogs in Klang Valley. Further studies are required in order to determine the involvement of T. gondii in causing neurological diseases in dogs in Malaysia
