Abstract
Introduction: COVID-19 has significantly changed the solid waste management (SWM) practices, due to several reason such as the changes in waste composition and decrease in recycling rates. Appropriate waste management practice of the population is related with the level of their knowledge and attitude. Objectives: To determine the solid waste management (SWM) practice among residents in the rural area of Besut, Terengganu during COVID-19 and its association with their knowledge and attitude. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 244 residents selected from eight villages in Besut. The waste generation rate and waste composition were sampled from 20 households. The sociodemographic characteristic, waste management practice, knowledge and attitude were assessed using a self-administered questionnaire. Results and Discussion: Majority of residents are female (56.1%), aged 18–27 years old (38.1%), with certificate/diploma (32.4%), and earn between RM1000–RM2000 (31.6%). The solid waste generation rate in the study area was 0.2 kg/person/day and every household generated 1.16 kg waste/day. The waste composition mainly comprises of food waste (60.47%), plastic (13.23%), and paper (7.75%). The majority of residents use landfills (48.4%) as waste disposal methods, followed by open burning (47.5%), and recycling and burying (2%). The majority of residents have good attitude (N = 193, 79.1%), but moderate knowledge (N = 100, 41%) and practice (N = 170, 69.7). Significant relationship was observed between age, education level, and family income with knowledge. Gender, education level, and family income were significantly related to attitude, and family income is significantly related to practice. Knowledge has a significant relationship with the attitude level (p < 0.001, r = 0.439), and attitude has a significant relationship with practice (p = 0.009, r = 0.167). Conclusion: This study found a significant relationship between practice with attitude. There is a need to improve practices among residents to prevent public health and environmental crises. Keywords: Knowledge, Attitude, Practice, Solid Waste Management, COVID-19
