Abstract
Introduction: Flood is one of Malaysia's natural disasters that has become a common occurrence almost every year. On December 17 2021, a massive flood occurred in Hulu Langat, Selangor as a result of continuous heavy rainfall, resulting in an extensive large-scale flood in Hulu Langat and named the worst affected by flooding in Selangor. Residents were caught off guard, resulting in the worst impact during and after the flood. Objective: To determine factors influencing the level of knowledge, perception and practice (KPP) regarding community preparedness during flood among community in Hulu Langat, Selangor and the associated factors. Methodology: This comparative cross-sectional design was conducted from August 27 to October 1 2022 at Hulu Langat which involved 242 residents from territory of Kajang and Ampang. Cluster sampling was used in selecting Ampang and Kajang territory, followed by simple random sampling for respondents in those two territories. A set of validated self-administered physical and online questionnaires consisting of 4 sections (Section A; Sociodemographic Information, Section B; Knowledge on Community Preparedness, Section C; Perception on Community Preparedness, Section D; Preparation on Community Preparedness) was distributed to obtain information from each respondent. Results and Discussion: Respondent shows good level of perception (64.5%) while moderate level for knowledge (36.8%) and practice (57.0%). Knowledge is significantly associated with age (r=0.144, p=0.023) and past flood experience (x2=8.021, p=0.018) while practice is only associated with past flood experience (x2=13.354, p=0.001). Significant correlation was found between knowledge and perception (r=0.389, p<0.001), knowledge and practice (r=0.500, p<0.001) also perception and practice (r=0.159, p<0.05). It was found that age (β = 0.027, p<0.05) and past flood experience (β =-0.808, p<0.05) significantly predicted the knowledge score, past flood experience also significantly predicted the practice score (β =-2.192, p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, Hulu Langat residents show a moderate level of knowledge and practice on community preparedness. Therefore, the respondents should involve more in programme on disaster preparation and recovery efforts in order to increase the level of KPP among community as well as to reduce the impact of flood by applying their knowledge on flood preparedness.
