Abstract

A total of five zinc borotellurite glass doped with europium oxide co-doped silver oxide with the chemical composition {[{(TeO2)0.7 (B2O3)0.3}0.7 (ZnO)0.3]0.96 (Eu2O3)0.04}(1-x)(Ag2O)x, where x = 0.0011 to 0.0015 molar fraction have been successfully synthesized by using the conventional melt quenching technique. The amorphous nature of the glass sample has been ascertained by the presence of a broad hump in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) result. The density of the glass system increased to 4.852 g/cm3 at molar fraction of 0.0013 mol then decreased to 4.820 g/cm3 at molar fraction of 0.0014 mol before it increased again to 4.834 g/cm3 meanwhile the molar volume was found to have inversely propotional relationship with the density of the prepared glass sample. The optical properties of the glass were determined through absorption spectra that is obtained from the UV-Vis analysis. The direct and indirect optical band gap can be seen in the range of 2.8728 eV to 2.606 eV and 2.6414 eV to 2.529 eV respectively. The decrement in both values of optical band gap may be due to the creation of non-bridging oxygen in the glass system with the increment in silver oxide concentration that causes the band edge to shift to lower energies. The Urbah energy of the glass sample shows and opposite trend to the optical band gap, which indicated that the glass samples have lower rigidity. The value of the refractive index could be used to measure to other parameters such as molar refraction, electronic polarizability, oxide ion polarizability and metallization criterion. The refractive index of the glass sample was observed to increase with an increasing concentraion of the silver oxide, which due to the incresing number of non-bridging oxygen in the glass network. For this glass system, the value of molar refraction and electronic polarizability was found to increase with the addition of silver oxide. The metallization criterion values obtained was in the range of 0.36343 to 0.35561 which indicate the tendency of metallization of glass sample is high and exhibit metallic behaviour.
