Abstract
This study explores the impact of rainfall on runoff and water yield in the Caluk River catchment, Setiu, Malaysia, focusing on the period from 2012 to 2022. The region's hydrology is influenced by climate, terrain, and geology, with climate change affecting precipitation patterns. Urbanization intensifies surface runoff, altering natural water flow dynamics. Watershed management becomes crucial to balance water resources sustainably. The research objectives include determining annual water yield, understanding rainfall, and runoff patterns, and evaluating water yield during dry and wet seasons. The study utilizes data obtained from the Drainage and Irrigation Department, employing time series plots, descriptive statistics, and trend analyses. Caluk River, a vital water source for local communities, experiences monsoons influencing water yield production. Findings reveal a positive correlation between rainfall and runoff, indicating an increase in rainfall with rising runoff. Runoff dominates the rise in water yield, influenced by area features. While seasonal variations exist, the study suggests a need for longer-term analysis to comprehensively address climate change impacts. In conclusion, the research sheds light on Caluk River's hydrological dynamics, emphasizing the importance of understanding short and long-term variations for effective water management. The positive relationship between rainfall and runoff highlights the significance of climate-induced changes. The study recommends extended analysis over 20-30 years for a more comprehensive understanding of water production and climate change, aiding in the development of targeted water management strategies based on climatic conditions.
