Abstract

Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) is a demanding renewable nanomaterial in today's industry due to its unique properties and wide applications in various fields. A successful modification of this material with other materials may cause an improvement in optical or structural properties. In this research, NCC was modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to study its properties using different characterization methods. The NCC/PEI thin film has been fabricated using spin coating technique. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the thin film functional groups of O–H, C–H, N–H and C–O was determined. Next, the optical properties of thin-film were successfully analyzed using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The NCC/PEI thin film obtained the highest absorption value of 4.23 at wavelength 282 nm with energy band gap of 4.149 eV. The implementation of NCC/PEI thin film to investigate its sensing properties for bacteria samples in different concentrations was applied using surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The results gave a positive response with a sensitivity of 0.149° mL-1 at the lowest limit detection at 10-5 mL. Lastly, the composite thin film's surface morphology has been investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), which resulted in a sharp and increase of surface roughness with the appearance of rod-like shaped particle structures after in contact with bacteria solution. This confirmed the interaction between the NCC/PEI thin film with Salmonella which give the positive response of SPR. As conclusion, NCC/PEI thin film shows good potential for detecting Salmonella.
