Abstract

Dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) with approximately 14 genera and 170 species, are key indicators of biodiversity due to their close relationship with mammals and forests. This study aims to determine and compare the morphometrics of dung beetles based on their guild structure between interior and exterior forest in Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve. The sampling was carried out at two different study sites; interior and exterior of Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve (SISFEC). This study was conducted using passive sampling by setting up pitfall trap with horse dung used as bait. Systematic sampling with random starting point was used as sampling design. 45 pitfall traps was set up at each study sites. Habitat qualities assessment such as canopy cover, relative humidity, air temperature, tree density and plant composition were measured to understand how habitat characteristics influence dung beetle morphology and guild structures. From the result, total 129 dung beetles where 109 individuals were found in the interior forest and 20 individuals were found in the exterior forest, comprising five genera and two guild structures were collected. The environmental conditions significantly impact the morphological characteristics of dung beetles, influencing body size and the size of various body parts.
