Abstract

Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve (AHFR) consists of six compartments which are Compartments 1,2,12,13,14, and 15. This study was conducted in Compartment 2 with a land area of 156 hectares. This study was conducted to assess the influence of vegetation variables on the abundance of anurans at Bohol River in Compartment 2 of Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve, Selangor. Three areas of the river were used in this sampling which are upstream area, midstream area, and downstream area. A total of nine quadrats with an area of 5x5 meters. With three replicate quadrats for each area of Bohol River. There were three microclimate parameters such as ambient temperature, relative humidity, and soil Ph. While for microhabitat parameters are percentage of canopy cover, number of trees, understory vegetation, and number of short woody plants. anuran sampling was conducted starting from August until September between 2000 to 2300 hours. The location of anuran found, and the measurement of anurans were recorded. A total of 94 individuals of anurans comprising 16 families from six families were recorded from this study. Based on the results Calchorana labialis were the highest captured species with 21 individuals followed by Leptobrachium nigrops with 14 individuals and 13 individuals of Limnonectes malesianus. Kalophrynus palmatissimus also recorded in Compartment 2 as this species is categorized as Endangered (EN) species. Generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) used to examine the key environment factors such as canopy cover and temperature that effecting the anuran species distribution. As a result, this research will help to update the checklist of anuran species in AHFR, help to identify habitat preference of anurans in isolated forest, and as baseline study for long-term study on the effect isolations on anurans. Future research is necessary to study the impact of forest disturbance on the abundance of the anurans as anthropogenic activities affect the habitat and species richness of the frogs.
