Abstract
Introduction: In this study, lifting and carrying score of minimarket worker as well as the musculoskeletal disorder risk assessment were determined among minimarket worker around Cheras district. There were 87 respondents involved in this study; consisting of cashier, storekeeper and meat cutter. Objective: This study was conducted for the purpose of determining the hazard and health problem of manual handling among workers in retail industry. Method: The Manual Handling Assessment Charts Method were used to evaluate the lifting and carrying procedure, Rapid Entire Body Assessment Method were used to evaluate the posture of workers while doing their daily work and Nordic Questionnaire were used to identify body area with pain or discomfort during the last 12 month and 7 days. Result: Result showed the scores of lifting and carrying for male and female cashier and female storekeeper were low. The male storekeeper and meat cutter had medium scores. The work posture scores for both male and female cashier and female storekeeper were low, while the male storekeeper and meat cutter had medium scores. There was a relationship between the carry distances of load with musculoskeletal disorder for male storekeeper at the hand and upper back region. There was a significant relationship between the hand distances to the low back while carrying load with musculoskeletal disorder among female storekeeper in the hand region. The risks of manual material handling by worker were between low and medium according to work type. Conclusion: In conclusion, the risks of manual handling among worker were still at acceptable limit but actions should be taken to reduce further risk.
