Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical strength of the top, middle, and bottom heartwood and sapwood of eight-year-old Paraserianthes falcataria trees. For bending samples, data were obtained for density, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and failure modes. Five tree replicates from Kuala Krai in Kelantan, Malaysia, were selected. For the flexural test, 450 samples were prepared using Instron 3366 10kN and Instron 5582 100kN. The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the three vertical positions had significant effects on the wood air dried density MOE, and MOR. From the bottom to the middle position, the mean wood density decreased; at the top, it slightly increased. From the top to the bottom section, there was an increase in the mean modulus of elasticity (MOE). In contrast to the mean MOE, the mean modulus of rupture (MOR) had the highest value at the top and the lowest value at the bottom. It has been determined that there is a correlation between Paraserianthes falcataria's compression strength and its associated variation. Overall, the results show a low to moderately high association between compressive strength and density. For compression test, the most common failure mode is plastic deformation, with 150 pieces at the top position, 120 at the middle position, and 122 at the bottom position. In terms of crushing, the middle position has 48 pieces, compared to the top's 1 piece and the bottom's 44 pieces. Low frequency is shown for every position in case of other failure types. Next, the standard ASTM D143 Static Bending and Compression Test was used to identify failure modes.
