Abstract

Bamboo is a unique group of tall grasses with woody jointed stems which belongs to the subfamily Bambusoideae that is a member of the Poaceae family, usually referred to as the grass family. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 (FRA) contains the most recent statistics, which show that bamboo occupies around 35 million hectares of land throughout Africa, Asia, and the Americas. A study was conducted to identify the types of bamboo products that consumer had purchased while determining external factors that will influence their purchasing of bamboo products among students in Universiti Putra Malaysia, Campus Serdang, Selangor. Data has been collected using a random sampling method through questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to measure frequency and percentage, and the collected data was analysed using MS Excel. Questionnaires were distributed to 393 respondents via online around Faculty in Universiti Putra Malaysia. The results from the survey showed that a total of 216 respondents (55.0%) most preferred bamboo furniture as their preferred choice. Furthermore, the first factor prioritised by the 179 respondents in purchasing is the price (45.5%), followed by design as the second factor at 163 respondents (41.5%), aesthetics as the third factor with 162 respondents (41.2%), durability as the fourth factor with 156 respondents (39.7%) and environment friendly as the last factor with 128 respondents (32.6%). The findings of this study can help to improve the bamboo industry's understanding of consumer preferences where design is the most influential factor in purchasing bamboo products. With this understanding, the bamboo manufacturers will more concern in designing and producing bamboo products based on consumer preferences.
