Abstract
The Malaysian furniture industry has evolved from a small cottage industry to an export-oriented multibillion-ringgit industry. This study investigate the Malaysian furniture export for 25 years, from 1996 to 2020. The trends focused in the pattern and growth rate of furniture export during the implementation of Industrial Master Plans (IMPs) periods and before and after the introduction of the National Timber Industry Policy (NATIP) in 2009. The top export market, region, and product rankings were determined based on total share over a 20- year period (2001-2020). Export growth rate trends were determined using annual growth rate (AGR), compound annual growth rate (CAGR) and average annual growth rate (AAGR) using log-linear regression. The study found that American region was the top export market for Malaysian furniture (53%). The United States was the top importer of Malaysian furniture products. Wooden furniture (excluding office, kitchen, and bedroom furniture, as well as seats) was the most significant export commodity, followed by wooden furniture (excluding furniture for offices, kitchens, and bedrooms, and seats). Over the 25-year, the annual increase in Malaysian furniture exports fluctuated with CAGR of 2% and AAGR of 1.67%. During the period of IMPs, the export growth rate for the second IMP (1996-2005) was greater than the third IMP (2006- 2020). Similarly, the export growth rate before NATIP were greater than after the implementation of NATIP. Concerted efforts and policies are needed to improve the export performance of Malaysian furniture.
