Abstract

In this modern world, the amount of paper and its products has increased rapidly. In addition to using wood fiber as a common raw material to produce it, many other raw materials can be used as an alternative fibre source in the paper industry. One example of an alternative raw material is using banana pseudo stems. This project was done to determine the properties of paper for a mixture of recycled pulp with banana soda pulp for paper production. The comparison made is 100% recycled pulp, 50:50 recycled pulp and banana soda pulp and 100 banana soda pulp. Statistical data show that paper from 100% banana soda pulp has the highest physical and mechanical properties compared to paper mixed with both pulp and 100% recycled pulp. A comparison of recycled paper and mixed paper found that there was an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of the 50:50 mixed paper compared to 100% paper made from recycled pulp. This proves that banana soda pulp is suitable for use as an alternative fibre in the manufacture of paper that uses recycled pulp.
