Abstract
Summary: Introduction: Oil Palm harvesting activities is conducted manually and aided by environmental conditions such as height of oil palm tree and heavy fruit bunches have some risks to cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Objective: The main objective of the study is to determine the correlation between awkward working posture, individual factors and work-related factors that contribute to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) symptoms scores among oil palm harvester. Methods: Cross-sectional data were co llected from 122 male oil palm harvesters in two of the oil palm plantation in Johor using questionnaire to determine demographic, working information, lifestyle information and a translated Nordic questionnaire was used to determine MSD complaints. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to determine the intensity of pain or discomfort feeling. To assess awkward posture, Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OW AS) was used. Result: The overall prevalence of MSD was 93.4%, and by body parts, low back pain was reported to be the highest complaint within 12 months MSD (61.5%) compared to other body parts. The mean value for MSDs score was 3.345 cm out of 10 cm. In overall, the most action category level adopted was Action Category 2 (57%) compared to other action category level. The highest relative proportion postures adopted was bent back, both arms below shoulders, and standing straight on two legs. Correlation analysis and linear regression analysis revealed that factors such as working in awkward posture and age were significant factors of MSDs symptom score among oil palm harvester. Conclusion: Oil palm harvesters are exposed to awkward posture that may lead to an increased risk of developing MSDs. Keyword: Musculoskeletal disorders; Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OW AS); oil palm harvester; age.
