Abstract

Introduction: In Malaysia, there were approximately 110 thousand registered nurses in 2020, an increase compared to the year before. Public healthcare services require nurses to be physically active and exposed to work-related hazards to fit with the busy work environment in Malaysia. Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the association between musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) symptoms and risk fac-tors among nurses in family health unit in Pekan District Health Office. Methodology: A cross-sectional study design and stratified random sampling were used. A total of 112 respondents participated in this study. A validated Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), a set of self-administered questionnaires and Ergonomic Risk Assessment (ERA) were used in this study. Results and Discussion: The result showed that the prevalence of MSD symptoms among nurses was 81.3%. Body parts reported with high MSD symptoms were lower back (70.5), neck (31.3%) and shoulder (25%). Chi-square test showed a significant association (p<0.05) between awkward posture, static work posture, marital status, physical activity and employment duration with MSD symptoms. Multiple logistic regression showed static work posture as the most significant risk factor (OR=4.776, 95% CI = 1.001, 22.796, p = 0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that the prevalence of MSD symptoms among nurses in family health unit was high due to awkward posture and static work posture which may contribute to the risk of developing MSD.
