Abstract
ummary: Decreasing in hearing ability among worker especially for those who are exposed to high noise level is increasing recently. Among all the workplace that is produce noise, worker that works as aircraft worker are among that is exposed directly to high noise level. The main objective for this study is to determine the association between noise exposure and hearing ability of the aircraft workers. In order to achieve the objective, a total of 100 male respondents aged between 18 to 55 years old were selected. All of the respondents were given self-administered questionnaires and the current condition of worker's hearing tested with audiometer. Besides, 20% of the respondents also were selected for noise exposure determination which is each of them was attached with noise dosimeter during working hours. The results from Spearmen's Rho Correlation show that there is significant relationship between the noise exposure and hearing ability among the aircraft worker with p< 0.05 and I' = 0.454. The Regression equation for Hearing Ability = 0.047 (Type of Work) + 0.271 (Duration of Employment) + 0.290 (Noise Exposure) - 0.619 and R2 = 0.627. Only three factors that are significantly influence the hearing ability which is duration of employment and noise exposure. The logistic equation for factors influencing noise level, Noise Level =38.78(Type of aircraft) - 39.343(Type of occupation) ¬17.336 and R2 = 0.84. The noise level is not significantly influenced by the factors. The noise exposure level of the aircraft worker at Subang Airport, Selangor is not at dangerous level which is 71 % of them are exposed to noise level below 85 dB(A). However, prolong exposure to noise level more than 5 years of employment and exposure high noise level can affect the hearing ability. Application of control measures should be focus on the worker who is work with big aircraft such as Boeing 737 which is the noise level is higher than 85 dB(A) and those who are frequently exposed like driver and technician. Key words: Hearing ability, noise exposure, Malaysia, aircraft worker, airport
