Abstract
Hiking is a recreational activity that people of all ages can do. Climbing gives many benefits to a person's physical and mental health. Motivation plays an important role in encouraging one's participation in hiking activities. This study was conducted to explore the motivational factors for participation in hiking activities and choice of hiking trails among students of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). A total of 162 questionnaires were distributed to UPM students. The questions from this questionnaire was developed based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs which consist of several dimensions namely self-actualization needs, self-esteem needs, social needs, safety needs and physiological needs. The scope covered in the questionnaire was the motivation of hiking, the choice of hiking trails and factors influencing choice of hiking trails. From the results of the study, the motivation that encourages students to go hiking is to feel calm with a mean value of 4.69. The results also show that the natural scenery along the route is the main factor in the choice of hiking trails with a mean value of 4.65. This research can help students at UPM to have a better understanding of the motivation of hiking. This will increase student involvement in hill or mountain climbing activities. Through this study, we can see the motivational factors that cause students to get involved in hiking activities.
