Abstract
Recreation resource management include both recreational enjoyment and resource conservation. Located in Taman Negara National Park, Gunung Tahan (2,187 meters above sea level) is one of Malaysia's best trekking routes into the country's interior. There are two routes to the summit of the mountain: the Merapoh Trail and the Kuala Tahan Trail, which has carried over 70% of hikers since its inception. The Merapoh Trail has seen heavy foot traffic since it opened in 1995, endangering both the quality of recreational opportunities and the integrity of the resource. This study set out to assess the problematic areas of the Merapoh Trail at the montane forest zone by (i) to determine the relationship between trail slope, trail canopy cover and elevation between trail depth and trail width of the mentane region of Merapoh Trail, (ii) to determine the influence of trail slope, trail canopy cover and elevation on th trail depth and trail width of the montane region of Merapoh Trail. A total of 106 study plots were established by using the Census-based Technique and Condition Class Rating. Based on the result, it shows that between all the inventory parameters only the slope that affects the deepening and widening of the trail. Finally, a summary describing the findings of this study has been provided, along with recommendations for further research to improve the applicability of the findings for greater outcomes.
