Abstract

Camping activity is a popular recreation activity for leisure. Camping activity is popular among visitors and has been receiving an increase in visitors who are interested in adventure activity. However, there no formal regulations on safety practices that guides camp operators. This study aims to explore the safety practices among camp operators in Pekan Nanas, Pontian, Johor. The study used face-to-face in-depth interviews and observation to collect data. This study collected data from 2 participants who are owners of the campsite to understand their safety practices in their campsite. The data was analysed using thematic analysis. Three elements of safety practices among camp operators were identified which are safe design and infrastructure that involve site suitability assessment of the natural and man-made environment. Second, the safety practices among operators at the campsite during the preparation, implementation and monitoring of activities were identified specifically in terms of the site and use of equipment and finally the safety training and knowledge among staffs. Despite the lack of formal guideline for safety practices at campsites, the operators showed that they are knowledgeable of the necessary preparation of the site and equipment functionality; implementation and monitoring processes of the activities to ensure the safety of their visitors. However, there are still areas to improve, especially in terms of the safety training and knowledge among staff. The development of their human capital is pertinent so that the facilitators or staff can better play their role in ensuring the safety of the visitors.
