Abstract

A second year (Package 11) project dissertation. Project paper (Doctor of Medicine (MD)) - Universiti Putra Malaysia, 2013. Background: Stress is very common, and among students of different courses, medical students are more prone to get stress. There are many factors that cause stress including socio-demographic characteristics, family factors, personal factors and religiosity, which has not yet been extensively studied. Objective: To determine the prevalence of stress and its association with factors particularly religiosity among medical students in University Putra Malaysia, Serdang. Method: This is a cross-sectional study using pretested self-administered questionnaires consist of 3 parts; socio-demographic information, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Score 21 (DASS 21) and Duke University Religion Index (DUREL), distributed among medical students and the data collected were analyse using Chi-square test in IBM SPSS version 21. Results: Out of 409 medical students, we obtained 329 respondents which is 80.44% response rate. Most are aged 22 and above and majority are females. Respondents consist mainly of Malay and Muslims. A total of 65 respondents (19.8%) were found to be stress. Male has higher percentage of stress. Among ethnics, Indians are of highest prevalence of stress while among religions, other religions are more stress instead of Buddhist, Christians, Hindus and Muslims. Highest prevalence of stress are students with father of primary education level, mother of tertiary education level and low income family. Percentage of stress among students from pre-clinical year is higher, besides, it is also higher among non-Matriculation students. Students with satisfactory level of MUET band and entering medical school with not own choice have higher. prevalence of stress. Fortunately, there are association between socio-demographic characteristics and religiosity and the difference is significant. Conclusion: Prevalence of stress (19.8%) which is considered low, yet this finding should be given attention before the problem worsen and preventive measure should be taken in order to produce high quality doctors in the future. Unfortunately, there is no association between stress and religiosity among medical students of University Putra Malaysia. Keywords: Prevalence, Stress, Religiosity, Medical Students
