Abstract

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with different blue fluorescence intensities are synthesized through the carbonization method with the assistance of microwave by varying the solvents (deionized water, ethanol and dimethylformamide). The synthesis used watermelon peels as a source of raw material. CQDs in ethanol emitted the brightest blue fluorescence under UV light. The result also coincides with the data from photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. From PL spectroscopy, CQDs with ethanol shows the highest intensity of 493 nm emission wavelength due to the high polarity of the solvent. Under microwave heating, there is no significant different in term of the colour of the solution. However, from PL spectroscopy, the heat contributes to the blue-shifted (CQDs in deionized water) and red-shifted (CQDs in dimethylformamide) of emission wavelength. The size of CQDs in all samples can be estimated using the Brus equation. From the calculation, CQDs in all samples possess a similar size which is 2 nm. This might be due to the surface oxidation from different solvents.
