Abstract
Summary: Introduction: Phthalates are multifunctional chemicals that are used in a variety of consumer products including cosmetics and personal care. These harmful chemicals were also known to affect the human health such as endocrine and reproductive system problems. Objectives: This study was conducted to compare the knowledge and practices of phthalate relating to usage of personal care products between science based and non-science based students of Universiti Putra Malaysia. Methodology: This cross sectional study was conducted among 320 students which the equal proportion for science based faculty (160) and non-science based faculty (160). The collection of data was done from February 2012 until April 2012. A set of pre-tested questionnaire was conducted before the study was done. A set of questionnaire was used to obtain socio-demographic, knowledge about phthalate and practices on using personal care products. Results: This study found that the knowledge on phthalate between these two groups was generally poor but the science based students had good score rather than non science based. The results show there was a significant difference in knowledge relating to phthalate between science based student and non science based students where Z = 2.045, P = < 0.05 and X2= 5.391, p = < 0.02. There was a significant difference also in practices of using personal care products between sciences based and non-science based students where Z = 3.723, P = < 0.0001 and X2 = 8.079, p = < 0.05. However, there was no significant association found between the knowledge of phthalate and how they were practiced personal care products. Conclusion: The students mostly do not know about phthalate and the health effect, but they were able to using personal care products in moderate way. Recommendation: For recommendation, the students were advised to take courses relating to environmental health in order to get knowledge and increase their awareness on chemical affecting human health.
