Abstract
Introduction: Malaysia was known as one of the natural disaster free zones which arc freed from earthquake, volcanoes, typhoon, etc. As we know, children are a group of community that vulnerable to the danger of flood disaster. Schools as a public space for our children have served as the vulnerable place when hit by the flood. The impact would have been unimaginable if the disaster occurs during school hours. Children are still in a phase where they cannot be independent and still need the help of parents and adults to help them. They would be in danger if they are facing the flood situation without parents or adults with them for help, and without any knowledge and preparation in response towards flood disaster. Therefore, the study conducted among children at the primary school level due to the fact that, the school has a tangible role in building community resilience. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the difference of knowledge transfer of flood preparedness after the introduction of e-learning software among treatment group and control group of the school children. Methodology: The study population involved two groups (treatment vs. control) of student from the age of 9 years old whose school located along the river-basin of flood-prone areas at Klang, Selangor. This study used the pretest-posttest Quasi-Experimental design to test the effectiveness of the intervention program following the treatment (introduction of school-based flood preparedness e-learning software). A set of pre-and-post questionnaire was used to obtain the information about socio-demographic, knowledge and the effectiveness of the knowledge transfer of flood preparedness after using the flood preparedness educational toolkit software. Results and Discussion: There is a significant difference of knowledge levels on flood after the introduction of flood preparedness e-learning software. This indicated that mostly the knowledge level of students after following this intervention was increased as compared before the introduction that e-learning software. Conclusion: This study suggested that with the introduction of this flood preparedness e-learning software, it will help to increase the interest of students to learn and enhance their knowledge on flood preparation. Therefore. the students can share and practice what they have learned about knowledge on flood preparedness in school with their families.
