Abstract
The potential for expansion in small animal practice is continuously growing globally, especially in Malaysia. However, the information on success factors in small animal practices is limited. Hence, this study attempted to (i) identify the best contributing factors toward the success of small animal practice with emphasize on quality patient management, teamwork, customer service, finance, and marketing; and (ii) examine if demographic characteristics and practicing background of small animal practices are related to the success of veterinary clinics. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted on 62 small animal clinics in Klang Valley using convenience sampling. The questionnaires were distributed through online platforms and clinic visits. There are 3 sections, including demographic characteristics, practicing background and success factors of small animal practices. A 5-point Likert-scale was designed for the third section, ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Data collected were descriptively analysed. Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis H test were conducted for differential analysis while Chi-squared test was used for association analysis. Majority of the respondents were female (64.5%), between 31-50 years old (58.1%), practice owners (74.2%), and had 3 years or less of experience in the practice (43.6%). Most of their practices were sole proprietorships (53.2%) and from Petaling district (38.7%). Among the 62 respondents, quality patient management and marketing were the most (93.5%) and the least (84.0%) important factors respectively. The study showed that there were significant differences (p<0.05) between age of respondents and finance factor. The larger the age group, the significantly lower the mean score of finance. However, there was no significant association (p>0.01) of both demographic characteristics and practice background variables with predefined success factors. In conclusion, the five success factors are equally important for the success of small animal practices in Klang Valley and are required to be prioritized and highlighted.
